FAQ's Retinol

IS IT SUITABLE FOR SENSITIVE SKIN?

There are irritation risks with Retinol. This is why we made our formula slow release to reduce the risk of irritation and make it suitable for most skin types. However, if you have very sensitive skin, or are pregnant or breast feeding, we suggest you try our Bakuchiol moisturizer. A natural alternative to Retinol. It also helps target signs of ageing and is suitable for all.

WHY CAN'T I USE RETINOL IN THE MORNING?

As Retinol speeds up skin renewal, newer skin reaches the surface quicker. This can increase the skin's sensitivity to the sun. That's why we recommended only using Retinol in the PM and always using a broad spectrum sunscreen during the day.

SHOULD I FOLLOW WITH A MOISTURIZER?

Yes, it is important to still use the moisturizer. This is due the fact retinol can have drying effects on our skin. If you’re only just starting out and your skin is on a sensitive side, you could apply retinol on top of moisturizer to minimise the risk of dehydration.

SHOULD I APPLY RETINOL IN MY ROUTINE?

Retinol is your PM ‘Treat step’. Layer it with your other serums after cleansing and follow up with a moisturizer or an oil.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I USE IT?

Start of with 1-2 times per week and increase gradually if your skin can tolerate more frequent use.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO SEE RESULTS?

Retinol can take up to six weeks to show results. This is due to the time it takes for your skin cells to be replaced. Consistency is key, so continue with you routine even if you’re not seeing the effects straight away. It can be very tempting to increase use of some products to try and see quicker results, don't overdo it though. More is not always better change for future. Overuse can cause irritation and sensitivity.

WHEN SHOULD I START USING RETINOL?

We recommend starting at age 25, or when the first signs of aging begin to show.

IS IT PREGNANCY SAFE?

We do not recommend this product if pregnant or breastfeeding, consult your doctor before use.

IS THIS PRODUCT VEGAN?

Yes! This product contains no animal derivatives and is now certified by The Vegan Society.

WHEN USING WITH OTHER PRODUCTS...

Do not use together: Vitamin C. We do not recommend using Retinol and Vitamin C at the same time. It is best to use Retinol in the PM. So, if using a Vitamin C, we would recommend using this in the morning. As it has antioxidant properties this is when you will get the most out of the product. AHAs (Glycolic, Alpha Hydroxy, Lactic Acid). If you are also using an AHA in your evening routine, and want to add Retinol, we suggest using these on alternate evenings and ensuring you start off slowly to ensure you do not sensitise the skin.

WHAT IS RETINOL?

Retinol is a derivative of Vitamin A and helps to promote skin renewal and enhance collagen production working beneath the surface of the skin. By stimulating renewal processes in the skin, newer skin cells reach the surface faster helping reverse and prevent the signs of ageing while brightening and smoothing skin.

WHAT IS RETISTAR? IS IT THE SAME AS RETINOL?

RetiSTAR™ is a stable form of retinol in a dispersion containing tocopherol, sodium ascorbate and PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil in caprylic/capric triglycerides to ensure maximum effectiveness. Conventional retinol creams and serums can flood the skin with retinol which can cause skin sensitivities and redness.

I’VE HEARD RETINOL IS GOOD FOR ACNE?

Our Retinol serum is targeted for signs of ageing; however, some retinol products can be used to treat acne. We would suggest seeking professional advice from your doctor / dermatologist to help you understand your requirements to help treat acne.

CAN RETINOL HELP WITH ACNE SCARS?

With properties of increasing cell turnover, and improving texture, retinol can help to reduce discolouration left from acne. It’s important to understand what type of scarring you have before treating with retinol so we would recommend to visit your doctor/ derm etc etc

I’M NOTICING MY SKIN IN PURGING WHEN I STARTED USING RETINOL, HOW LONG WILL IT LAST?

Purging can take up to 4- 6 weeks. During this period it is important to maintain consistent usage and keep the skin hydrated. It’s important to ensure you are using the right cleanser and moisturizer to keep your skin balanced. Using serums like Niacinamide can also help to restore and balance your skin. If your purge lasts longer than six weeks, discontinue use and seek medical advice.

WHAT IS THE PH LEVEL OF THIS PRODUCT?

PH LEVEL: 5.53

Not for oily acne prone skin

Even though this product is really good it would be great if you could make a Squalane free version of it. As other people have mentioned Squalane is not very helpful for us with oily acne prone skin. Especially us who have adult acne and retinol would really benefit our skin from aging. Love the creamy like texture but I really hope you get rid of Squalane.

Hey Marion! Thank you for your feedback. Squalane is an oil which is suitable for all skin types, including acne prone skin due to it's lightweight texture and being unlikely to clog pores. Applying an oil to oily skin can actually help by your oils out! However, everyone's skin is different! 🖤

First experience with retinol

I tried retinol for the first time 3 months ago. Started it with using it every other night to avoid dry patches on my skin and after a month using it every night. I love the structure and feeling of the product. My skin looks a lot better in general though I can't say if it helps with wrinkels since I nearly have none. But I have received compliments on my skin looking good. Happy customer over here!

3 months and still breakout out.

Although my hyperpigmentation has gotten better, the breakouts have been so much worse. Had to stop using it to repair my skin barrier. The acne definitely outweighs my hyperpigmentation getting better.

Retinol

It doesn't sting or irritate and this surprises me Retinol is expected to do so. I would like to know exactly the percentage I am using please, so eventually when I build it up, I will know what to get.

Great product for a very good price

Hey Catherine! Within the formulation the Retinol serum equates to 0.1% Retinol : 1% RetiStar (0.05% Retinol) and Granactive Retinoid (0.05% Hydroxypinacolone Retinoate). 🖤

Best retinol I've tried

I've tried some different retinol products the last couple of years but they've either caused irritation & peeling or no effect at all. This product however is so gentle but still effective! I've seen big difference in the amount of breakouts I have, the time it takes for my blemishes to heal and also some improvement with fine lines. I also like how it is formulated and feels on the skin. The price is a big plus too! The only negative thing I have to say is that it is not always available to order ;)
